vor wenigen Tagen habe ich im terzo programma der RAI eine sehr schöne Kritik Ihres neuen Buches von Elena Croce gehört. Sofort musste ich daran denken, dass wir seit Jahren nichts mehr voneinander gehört haben – obwohl wir seit 1970 in Italien wohnen, seit unserm letzten Besuch bei Ihnen, anno ’69 dieses Land sozusagen nicht wieder verlassen haben.
Nie allerdings war ich seit damals wieder in Torino. Ich schreibe Ihnen auf deutsch, weil: mein Italienisch non è molto divertente, la mia grammatica non è ancora completa. (La mia figlia di quattro anni parla più essato di me). [2]
Wir haben hier ein kleines Haus gekauft, mit viel terreno und alberi di olivi. Ich kann hier in Ruhe arbeiten und habe inzwischen fünf Bücher publiziert.
Meine Frage: haben Sie für Ihr neues Buch schon einen Verlag[3] in der Bundesrepublik? Gerade hat nämlich der S. Fischer Verlag[4] bei mir angefragt, ob ich etwas Interessantes aus Italien wüsste.

qualche giorno fa, ascoltando il terzo canale della RAI, ho sentito un approfondimento molto bello di Elena Croce sul Suo nuovo libro. Mi è subito venuto in menteche non ci sentiamo da anni – nonostante noiviviamo in Italia dal 1970 e si può dire che dall’ultima volta che siamo venuti a trovarLa, anno ‘69, non abbiamo più lasciato questo Paese.
Va detto che da allora non sono più tornato a Torino. Le scrivo in tedesco perché il mio italiano non è molto divertente, la mia grammatica non è ancora completa. (La mia figlia di quattro anni parla più essato di me).[2]
Abbiamo comprato una piccola casa qui, con molto terreno e alberi di olivi. Qui posso lavorare in pace e nel frattempo ho pubblicato cinque libri.
Ho una domanda: ha già un editore[3]in Germania ovest per il suo nuovo libro? La S. Fischer Verlag[4]mi ha appena chiesto se potevo segnalare qualcosa di interessante dall’Italia.

A few days ago I heard a very nice review of your new book by Elena Croce on RAI 3. I could not help but think about the fact that you and I have not been in touch for years—even though we have lived in Italy since 1970, and basically have not left the country since our last visit to you in ‘69.
But I have not been back to Turin since. I am writing you in German because my Italian isn’t much fun, my grammar is quite limited. (My four-year-old daughter speaks better than I do.)[2]
We have bought a small house here, on a large plot of land and many olive trees. I can work in peace and quiet here, and have now published five books.
My question: do you already have a publisher[3] for your new book in West Germany? I ask because S. Fischer Verlag[4] has just asked me if I know of anything interesting from Italy.
Do write me!
