herzlichen Dank für Ihren Brief und Ihre Bemühungen bei Einaudi um mein Theaterstück. Ich freue mich sehr, daß es Ihnen gefällt. Nun, warten wir ab, was Caesare Cases dazu meint.
Sehr leid tut es mir, dass der Funk in HamburgIhr Kapitel nicht senden möchte. Aus verschiedenen Gründen will man es nicht: Einmal, weil man zur Zeit finanziell sehr knapp ist – man möchte die Übersetzung nicht für dieses eine Kapitel bezahlen – sodann, weil man lieber abwarten möchte, bis das Buch in einem deutschen Verlag erschienen ist.
Meine Bemühungen sind also fehlgeschlagen, obwohl ich mich wirklich sehr für Sie engagiert habe.
Aber die andere Möglichkeit bleibt noch: In der Zeitschrift „Konkret“ will man – wenn auch wahrscheinlich nur auszugsweise – das Kapitel „El Greco“ drucken. Nur wird das noch einige Zeit dauern. Bitte, seien Sie deshalb nicht traurig. Am traurigsten aber bin ich, weil ich mich ja dafür einsetzen wollte.
Sie hören wieder von mir, sowie etwas Konkretes zu erfahren ist.
Mit meinem Besuch in Italien wird es dies Jahr leider nichts mehr werden. Meine finanzielle Lage ist augenblicklich nicht gut.[1] Aber ich denke, bestimmt im Frühjahr des nächsten Jahres werden wir uns in Turin sehen. Ja, ich schreibe dann rechtzeitig, und ich werde auch ein paar Tage dort bleiben, um die schöne Stadt einmal besser kennenzulernen – und bei besserem Wetter als das letzte Mal.

La ringrazio molto per la sua lettera e per i suoi sforzi conEinaudi riguardo al mio lavoro teatrale. Sono molto contento che le piaccia. Aspettiamo di vedere cosa ne pensaCesare Cases.
Mi dispiace molto che la radio di Amburgo non voglia trasmettere il Suo capitolo. I motivi sono vari: per prima cosaal momento sono a corto di soldi, e dunque non vogliono pagare la traduzione del singolo capitolo; e comunque preferiscono aspettare che il libro venga pubblicato da un editore tedesco.
Sebbene mi sia impegnato molto per sostenerLa, i miei sforzi sono stati vani.
Resta comunque l’altra possibilità: la rivista «konkret» si è detta interessata a pubblicare «Il Greco», anche se magari solo in parte. Solo che ci vorrà un po’ di tempo.La prego di non dispiacersi. Il più dispiaciutodi tutti sono io perché volevo fare la mia parte per il libro.
Avrà notizie non appena si saprà qualcosa di concreto.
Purtroppo il mio viaggio in Italia quest’anno salta. Le mie finanze al momento non me lo consentono.[1]Ma ci vedremo sicuramente a Torino la prossima primavera. Sì, le scriverò per tempo e mi fermerò anche qualche giorno così potrò conoscere meglio la bellissima città – e con un tempo migliore dell’ultima volta.

Heartfelt thanks for your letter and for your efforts with Einaudi on behalf of my play. I am very glad you liked it. Now we will just have to wait and see what Cesare Cases thinks of it.
It pains me to report that the Hamburg radio station has chosen not to produce your chapter. They had various reasons: first, due to current financial straits—they do not want to pay for a translation of just this one chapter—and then also because they would rather wait until the book is available from a German publisher.
So my efforts came to naught, although I really did try hard on your behalf.
But the other possibility remains: the magazine Konkret wants to print the chapter “Il Greco”—although probably just excerpts of it. But that will take a little while yet. Please do not be too disappointed about that. Although I am really the most disappointed, since I truly wanted to support it.
I will be in touch with you again as soon as I have concrete news.
Regarding my trip to Italy, unfortunately it will not happen this year. My present financial situation is not good.[1] But I think we will almost certainly see each other next spring in Turin. So yes, I will write you in good time, and will also stay a few days, so as to finally get to know your lovely city a bit better—and in better weather than last time.
