Caro Amico,
Herzlichsten Dank für Deine freundliche Karte vom 24. 8. Ich habe sofort veranlasst, dass Dir eines der ersten Exemplar meines Buches geschickt wird, damit Einaudi wenigstens das zu sehen bekommt, wenn der Druckfahnen unterwegs verloren gegangen sein sollten.
Ich lege Unterlagen bei,[1] die zeigen, dass jetzt Anlass übergenug wäre, damit unser Auschwitz-Komitee vor die Öffentlichkeit tritt. Gedacht ist an eine Pressekonferenz in Düsseldorf oder Essen. Freilich weiss ich vorerst noch nicht, woher die Mittel dafür genommen werden sollen.
Ich habe mich entschlossen, mit den Kindern nach Italien zu fahren und die Reise abzubrechen, wenn ich nach Frankfurt muss. Wenn ich dabei in Oberitalien unterbrechen sollte werde ich versuchen, Dich anzurufen, damit wir uns zumindest telefonisch kurz sprechen können.

grazie di cuore per la tua gentile cartolina del 24 agosto. Ho provveduto immediatamente a farti pervenire una delle prime copie del mio libro, in modo che Einaudi possa almeno vederlo se le bozze di stampa fossero andate perse.
Ti allego dei documenti[1] che dimostrano quanto le ragioni siano più che sufficienti perché il nostro Comitato di Auschwitzsi presenti al pubblico. Stiamo pensando di organizzare una conferenza stampa a Düsseldorf o a Essen. Vero è che, per il momento, non so dove si possano reperire i fondi necessari.
Mi sono deciso a partire per l’Italia con i figli e a interrompere poi il viaggio quando dovrò andare a Francoforte. Se dovessi fermarmi quando sono nel Nord-Italia, cercherò di chiamarti: così, per lo meno, potremo parlare un po’ al telefono.

Many thanks for the friendly card you sent on August 24. I have arranged for one of the first available copies of my book to be sent to you, so that at least Einaudi will be able to see that, in case the proofs got lost on their way there.
I am enclosing some documents,[1] which show that there is now more than enough reason for our Auschwitz Committee to go public. One idea is to hold a press conference in Düsseldorf or Essen. Of course, I do not yet know where the funding will come from.
I have decided to go to Italy with the children and cut my trip short when I have to go to Frankfurt. If by chance I end up passing through Northern Italy, I will try to call you so we can at least speak briefly by phone.
