Hermann Langbein contatta Primo Levi per invitarlo a partecipare con un capitolo di Se questo è un uomo all’antologia Auschwitz. Zeugnisse und Berichte («Auschwitz. Testimonianze e resoconti»), con la quale il Comitato Internazionale di Auschwitz (IAK) si propone di pubblicare la prima grande raccolta di testimonianze dal campo di sterminio in vista del processo di Francoforte.

Wir haben die Absicht, ein Buch über Auschwitz[1] in deutscher Sprache herauszubringen und haben auch bereits einen Verlag für dieses Buch gefunden – die Europäische Verlagsanstalt in Frankfurt am Main. Das Buch soll im Herbst 1961 herauskommen, damit es bereits aufliegt, wenn in Frankfurt der grosse Auschwitz-Prozess durchgeführt wird.[2] Da man in so kurzer Zeit unmöglich ein neues Buch schreiben kann, haben wir uns entschlossen, in diesem Buch einzelne Kapitel aus der bereits bestehenden internationalen Auschwitz-Literatur so zusammenzustellen, dass sich daraus ein Gesamtbild von Auschwitz mit all seinen Lagern, Problemen und den verschiedenen Perioden ergibt.
Ich lege grossen Wert darauf, dass auch die italienische Auschwitz-Literatur in diesem Buch vertreten ist. Darum bitte ich Sie, uns Ihre Einwilligung zu geben, dass ein Kapitel Ihres Buches Se questo è un uomo dort abgedruckt werden darf. Bitte auch die Zustimmung Ihres Verlages uns zu verschaffen. Es ist daran gedacht, dass die Autoren der einzelnen Abschnitte dem Internationalen Auschwitz-Komitee die Abdrucksrechte für ein kurzes Kapitel ohne Anspruch auf Honorar (auch von Seiten des Verlages), übergeben. Der Europäischen Verlagsanstalt gegenüber gilt das Internationale Auschwitz-Komitee als Autor für das gesamte Buch. Selbstverständlich wird bei jedem einzelnen abgedruckten Abschnitt angegeben aus welchem Buch er stammt und wo dieses erschienen ist.
Wenn Sie Ihre Einwilligung dazu geben – was ich sicher hoffe, bitte ich Sie noch um einen Vorschlag, welches Kapitel Ihrer Meinung nach das geeignetste ist. Bitte dabei zu berücksichtigen, dass diese einzelnen Ausschnitte kurz sein müssen, da das gesamte Buch auf Wunsch des Verlages nicht mehr als etwa 300 Seiten haben soll und wir etwa aus 15 Büchern Ausschnitte verwerten wollen. Ist eine deutsche Übersetzung Ihres Buches schon da? Das wäre für mich eine grosse Hilfe. Falls nicht, wäre ich Ihnen sehr dankbar, wenn Sie mir eine englische Übersetzung Ihres Buches schicken könnte, die meines Wissens schon erschienen sein dürfte.

Abbiamo intenzione di pubblicare un libro su Auschwitz[1] in lingua tedesca e abbiamo anche già trovato un editore: la Europäische Verlagsanstalt di Francoforte sul Meno. Il libro dovrebbe uscire nell’autunno del 1961, in modo che sia già disponibile per quando comincerà il grande processo Auschwitz di Francoforte.[2] Poiché è impossibile scrivere un libro nuovo in così poco tempo, abbiamo deciso di raccogliere in questo volume singoli capitoli tratti dalla letteratura internazionale su Auschwitz che già esiste, così che ne emerga un quadro complessivo di Auschwitz con tutti i suoi sottocampi, i suoi problemi e nelle sue diverse fasi.
Ho molto a cuore che nel volume sia rappresentata anche la letteratura italiana su Auschwitz. Per questo motivo Le chiedo il Suo consenso a includere nella pubblicazione un capitolo di Se questo è un uomo; e la pregherei di fornirci anche il consenso del Suo editore. È previsto che gli autori dei singoli estratti cedano al Comitato Internazionale di Auschwitz i diritti di stampa di un breve capitolo, senza esigere alcun compenso (neanche da parte dell’editore). La Europäische Verlagsanstalt considererà autore dell’intero volume il Comitato Internazionale di Auschwitz. Va da sé che per ogni capitolo si indicheranno il libro da cui è stato tratto e il luogo di pubblicazione.
Se, come spero, darà il Suo consenso, Le chiedo anche di suggerire il capitolo che le sembra più adatto. La prego di tenere presente che i singoli estratti devono essere brevi, perché – su richiesta dell’editore – l’intero volume non dovrebbe superare, all’incirca, le 300 pagine, e i libri da cui vorremmo attingere sono una quindicina. È già disponibile una traduzione del Suo libro in tedesco? Per me sarebbe di grande aiuto. In caso contrario, Le sarei davvero grato se potesse inviarmi l’edizione inglese, che a quanto mi risulta dovrebbe essere già uscita.
Nell’ultima riunione la direzione del CIA ha deciso di affidarmi anche la cura di questo volume, e dunque sono felice di poter collaborare ancora una volta con Lei,[3] nonostante tutte le cose sgradevoli che succedono qui.

The book should be released in autumn 1961, so that it will already be available when the major Auschwitz trial in Frankfurt begins.[2] Because it would be impossible to write a new book in so little time, we have decided to collect individual chapters from books about Auschwitz that have already been published internationally, so as to offer an overview of Auschwitz including all its camps, problems, and various periods.
I consider it essential that the Italian-language literature about Auschwitz, too, be represented in this book. Therefore, I ask that you grant us permission to include a chapter of your book If This Is a Man. I would also request your help in getting your publisher’s permission. It is our hope that each contributor will grant permission to the International Auschwitz Committee to reprint a short chapter, without expectation of any fee (to either author or publisher). The Europäische Verlagsanstalt would consider the International Auschwitz Committee the author of this book. Naturally, each excerpt would clearly list what book it is drawn from, and where it was originally published.
Should you be willing to grant this permission—which I certainly hope—I would also request your advice regarding which chapter would be most suitable. When choosing, please bear in mind that each individual excerpt must be rather short, since the publisher is planning for the anthology to be no longer than about 300 pages, and we are planning to use passages from approximately 15 different books. Has your book already been translated into German? That would be extremely helpful. If not, I would be most grateful if you could send me an English-language translation – one, if I am not mistaken, has already been released.
