Fröhlich informs Levi that “Il Greco” (“The Greek”) is being read by the radio station in Hamburg and that he would like to personally translate it into German, to be published in the journal konkret. He sends him a first version of his theatrical play Vier Wände (“Four Walls”).

ich danke recht herzlich für Ihre Nachricht vom 20. 7. „Il Greco“ liegt zur Zeit beim Hamburger Rundfunk (Norddeutscher R.). Ich hoffe, in den nächsten Tagen bescheid zu erhalten, ob man es dort lesen will. Ich möchte das Kapitel dann übersetzen.
Auf jeden Fall aber wird es in der Zeitschrift „konkret“gedruckt, und wann – das hängt ganz von mir ab, das heißt: sowie ich mit dem Übersetzen fertig bin.[1]
Ich freue mich sehr zu hören, daß es mit Ihrem neuen Buch gut vorangeht. Ein Kapitel pro Monat: das finde ich sehr viel – und gar nicht langsam.

Mit gleicher Post schicke ich Ihnen mein Theaterstück in einer Ur-fassung. Ich habe das Stück stark überarbeitet, der Wissenschaftler in dem Stück ist in der Neufassung ein Dichter, dessen Werke die Familie bei jeder Gelegenheit zitiert. – Aber ich habe im Moment keine einzige Kopie. Darum vorerst diese alte Fassung. Der Inhalt ist im übrigen so geblieben.
Ich hoffe, dass in Deutschland entweder Rowohlt oder Suhrkamp als Verleger das Stück drucken. Und bei beiden Verlagen liegen zur Zeit die Manuskripte. Ein weiteres im Theater zu Göttingen.[2] Sollte Einaudi überhaupt Interesse an dem Stück haben, wird er nach dieser ersten Fassung schon einen Eindruck haben. Dann ist es ein leichtes, daß ich eine weitere Kopie anfertige. Gefällt es ihm aber nicht, wird es ihm auch in der Neufassung nicht sehr viel besser gefallen.
Ich arbeite an einem zweiten Stück Samson, die alttestamentarische Figur des starken Samson oder Simson übertragen auf Patrice Lumumba.[3] Der „Erlöser“ des Kongo. Es wird ein lyrisches Drama, denke ich mir, ein wenig in der Art von Lorca, wenn auch im ganzen härter und teilweise auch prosaischer. Vielleicht könnte man beide Stücke – wenn eines nicht ausreicht – als Buch machen.
Aber es dauert noch ein wenig. Denn ich habe erst mit der Arbeit begonnen.

Credo che ne verrà fuori un dramma lirico, un po’ nello stile di Lorca, anche se nel complesso più duro e a tratti più prosaico. Forse entrambi i lavori – se uno non fosse sufficiente – potrebbero diventare un unico libro.
Comunque ci vorrà ancora del tempo, perché ho appena iniziato a lavorarci.

I have heavily reworked it, the scientist in this draft has become a poet in the new version, whose family quotes his works every chance they get—but I do not have an extra copy at the moment. Hence I am sending this preliminary draft. Otherwise, the content remains basically the same.
I hope that, here in Germany, either Rowohlt or Suhrkamp decide to publish this play. Both of them have the manuscript right now. Another is with the Theater zu Göttingen.[2] Should Einaudi have any interest in it, he will be able to get an impression from this first draft. The magazine konkret, founded by Klaus Rainer Röhl (1928-2021), was an expression of the extra-parliamentary left, the student movement, and the German communist party, which had been outlawed in West Germany in 1956. Starting in 1959, the editor-in-chief of konkret was Ulrike Meinhof (1934-1976). She had been married to Röhl for a year, and in 1970 she was one of the founders of the terrorist group Rote Armee Fraktion. Kurt Hiller was an active collaborator with the journal. Fröhlich’s plan to translate and publish a chapter of The Truce in the journal fell through.

It does not appear that Fröhlich’s two dramas (Vier Wände, and Samson, mentioned shortly after) were ever published.

Patrice Lumumba, a Congolese politician and a symbol of the country’s fight for independence, had become prime minister of the new Republic of the Congo; he was assassinated on January 17, 1961 by political opponents who were supported by Belgium and other western powers that were worried about his drift toward the Soviet area of influence.
