Menschen in Auschwitz (People in Auschwitz) has finally been released: a French translation will soon be published and presented in Frankfurt in September with Eugen Kogon. Langbein asks Levi for news about Einaudi, where his book is being read.

Nun ist also mein neues Buch Menschen in Auschwitzherausgekommen. Es hat 607 Seiten und im Personenverzeichnis ist Dein Namen mit Hinweis auf 22 Stellen – ich glaube, Du bist einer der häufigst zitierten Auschwitzer. Und am schönsten: Der Verlag Fayard hat sich entschlossen, eine französische Übersetzung in seiner Reihe «Grands Dokuments de l’Histoire Contemporaine»[1] erscheinen zu lassen. Ich lege eine Kopie dieser Zusage bei, vielleicht macht es auf Herrn Dott-Ernesto Ferrero Eindruck.
An den Verlag Einaudi wurde ein Bürstenabzug am 4. 7. von meinem Verlagabgesandt. Hast Du ihn schon in Händen gehabt und Dir ein Urteil bilden können? Und hat schon ein Lektor sich damit beschäftigt?
Ich weiss, dass die Urlaubzeit jetzt ungünstig für derartige Fragen ist – ich zweifle daran, dass dieser Brief Dich jetzt überhaupt erreicht. Man sagt ja, dass ganz Italien im August auf Urlaub ist. Aber Du verstehst sicher, dass ich trotzdem mit diesen Fragen nicht warten wollte.
Am 20. September soll das Buch bei einer Konferenz in Frankfurt, die Professor Kogon zu leiten zugesagt hat, der Öffentlichkeit vorgestellt werden – ich habe also den Verlag bewegen können, diesmal Anstrengungen zu unternehmen, damit das Buch wenn irgend möglich ein Echo findet.
Ich war 14 Tage in den Bergen Osttirols auf Urlaub, meine Frau und die Kinder fahren im September (wenn der Urlaubsrummel vorbei ist und die Universität noch nicht begonnen hat) mit ihrem alten VW-Bus nach Italien. Sie wollen bis Sizilien kommen und arbeiten jetzt fleissig, um das Geld zusammenzubekommen für diese Reise.

Conta 607 pagine e nell’indice dei nomi il tuo compare con 22 rimandi: credo che tra i compagni di Auschwitz tu sia fra le persone più citate. Ma la cosa davvero bella è che l’editore Fayard ha deciso di pubblicarne la traduzione francese nella sua collana «Grands Documents de l’Histoire Contemporaine» [1]. Allego copia di questo parere positivo, magari farà colpo sul dott. Ernesto Ferrero.
Una bozza di stampa è stata inviata alla casa editrice Einaudi dal mio editore il 4 luglio. L’hai già avuta tra le mani, sei riuscito a fartene un’idea? E se n’è già occupato qualche redattore?
So che in periodo di ferie le domande di questo genere sono inopportune, e dubito persino che la mia lettera ti raggiunga subito. Si dice che ad agosto tutta l’Italia sia in vacanza. Ma capirai sicuramente perché, a dispetto di tutto, non vedevo l’ora di farti queste domande.
Il 20 settembre il libro sarà presentato al pubblico in occasione di una conferenza a Francoforte che il professor Kogon ha accettato di presiedere: questa volta sono riuscito a convincere l’editore a fare uno sforzo affinché il libro trovi qualche eco.
Ho trascorso due settimane di vacanza sulle montagne del Tirolo Orientale, mia moglie e i miei figli andranno in Italia a settembre (quando il trambusto vacanziero sarà finito e l’università non ancora iniziata) con il loro vecchio furgoncino Volkswagen. Vogliono arrivare fino in Sicilia e stanno lavorando sodo per racimolare i soldi del viaggio.

My new book People in Auschwitz has finally been published. It is 607 pages long, and in the index of names you appear in 22 passages—I believe you are the most oft-quoted survivor of Auschwitz. Even better: the publisher Fayard has decided to publish a French translation as part of its Grands Dokuments de l’Histoire Contemporaine series.[1] I’m enclosing a copy of their agreement, perhaps it will make an impression on Mr. Ernesto Ferrero.
My publisher sent a galley proof to Einaudi on July 4. Have you managed to have a look and formulate an opinion? And has any of the editors done anything with it?
I know vacation season is not the ideal time for such questions—I doubt this letter will even reach you promptly. People say that in August all of Italy is on vacation. But I am sure you will nevertheless understand that I did not want these questions to wait.
On September 20 the book should be at a conference in Frankfurt. Professor Kogon has agreed to lead a session presenting it to the public—so this time I have managed to convince the publisher to make an effort, so that the book might have some impact.
I spent 14 days’ vacation in the mountains of East Tyrol, and in September (after the high season and before the university starts again) my wife and children will drive the old VW Bus down to Italy. They want to make it all the way to Sicily, and are working hard to save up money for the trip.
