Ihr Kapitelwird erscheinen. Zur Zeit übersetzt man es. Ich nehme an, im Februar oder März wird es gedruckt vorliegen. Ich habe immer wieder gedrängt, es zu publizieren, aber Sie wissen ja, wie langweilig Redaktionen sind.
Wahrscheinlich ist Ihr Buch schon beendet? Wann wird es erscheinen – und wann in Deutschland? – Wird Fischer es bringen?

Für die bevorstehenden Feiertage wünsche ich Ihnen alles Gute, vor allem für das kommende Jahr, das – wie es scheint – weit friedlicher verlaufen wird als dieser so unruhige Herbst. Man kann damit rechnen, daß wir vor einer sehr entscheidenden Veränderung in der Weltpolitik stehen. Der Gegensatz China-UDSSR wird immer größer, was eventuell eine Entspannung zwischen den USA und der Sowjetunion zufolge hat.[3]

My trip to Turin still is not coming together. Early next year I am moving to Vienna.
In autumn 1963, my first novel will come out. Then I will have a bit of money and be able to settle down in Austria, where things will be quieter and more conducive to work. I also think that from there I will finally manage a trip to Italy. Should the occasion arise, I would be glad to see you.
I wish you all the best for the coming holidays, especially for the new year, which—it seems—will be so much more peaceful than this tumultuous autumn was. We can certainly expect a rather decisive shift in world politics. The China-USSR conflict is growing, which may lead to a détente between the USA and the Soviet Union.[3]

Considerando la data della missiva, è probabile che Fröhlich alluda al discorso pronunciato dal presidente sovietico Nikita Chruščëv il 12 dicembre 1962 davanti al Soviet Supremo, che proprio in quei giorni occupava le prime pagine dei principali quotidiani europei. In quell’occasione Chruščëv tornava sulla critica mossa da Pechino, secondo la quale, nel quadro della cosiddetta “crisi dei missili di Cuba” dell’ottobre 1962, Mosca avrebbe avuto un’attitudine arrendevole nei confronti degli Stati Uniti. Invero, la critica di Pechino si inscriveva in un contesto di tensione più ampio che faceva capo ad una serie di fattori quali la tiepida distensione dei rapporti tra Urss e Usa, la volontà di Pechino di minare la leadership internazionale sovietica, ma soprattutto la guerra sino-indiana dell’ottobre 1962, in cui la Cina, scontrandosi con l’India per questioni territoriali, non aveva ricevuto sostegno da parte di Mosca (sostegno che l’India aveva invece ottenuto dagli Stati Uniti).
