Enclosures not present in the correspondence files. Primo Leviâs private archive (PLPA) contains no letters exchanged between the two before 1972. The correspondence until 1972 has been reconstructed thanks to the Hermann Langbein fund (Depot Langbein, E/ 1797) stored at the Ăsterreichisches Staatsarchiv in Vienna (OESTA), where the enclosures sent by Langbein are not conserved with the correspondence (file 101 Italien) but can be identified in other locations. In this case, the document in question, entitled âZur Herausgabe eines Auschwitz-Buches,â was conserved in file 256a (untitled). It concerns a copy of a typewritten document, front side only, written in German and personally signed by Langbein, in which he summarizes the editorial events concerning the anthology and discloses the fact that Langbein has left the International Auschwitz Committee.
[2] After ousting Langbein, the new management of the International Auschwitz Committee (IAK), with headquarters in Warsaw, tried to assume responsibility for the editorial project Auschwitz. Zeugnisse und Berichte (âAuschwitz. Testimonials and Reportsâ). At that point, the publishing company, challenging the clause regarding the International Auschwitz Committee (IAK)âs lack of impartiality, annulled the contract and obliged Langbein, H.G. Adler, and Ella Lingens to sign a new one. Cf. the Box.
